It is important that all Tasmanians get ready for emergencies. It is even more important if you live with a disability.
People living with disability:
- Need to get ready for emergencies, like anyone in Tasmania
- May have some extra things to think about
- May need some support
- Are more likely to come to harm in an emergency
Help is available
You don’t have to be on the NDIS – if you identify as a person living with disability, we’re here to help you get ready for:
- Storms and floods,
- bushfires and
- other emergencies.

Pick the path that suits you and your life
You can:
Join a small group workshop to get ready for emergencies
Online or in-person workshops are available to help people with disability get ready for emergencies. These workshops follow the four step People-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) model:
- Your strengths and support needs in everyday life – you are the expert in your own life.
- Know how prepared you are for an emergency and learn about your disaster risk.
- Plan for your support needs in an emergency.
- Communicate your plan with the people in your support network and connect to address gaps.
The workshops:
- Help you think about what you will need to do before, during and after emergencies.
- Link you to information on floods, bushfires, house fires and other hazards.
- Help you to make an emergency plan to fit your life.
- Are often run together with
- disability peak bodies
- disability service providers, or
- community organisations.

In-person workshops
Visit our Where to get help page to see a list of scheduled in-person workshops. They are run often at Libraries Tasmania locations around the state. If you are interested in an in-person P-CEP workshop, but don’t see one on a date or location to suit you, please email pcep@ses.tas.gov.au.
It is important to discuss your emergency plan with the people in your life.
We also help households living with disability to get ready for emergencies. You can join a workshop if you are a close family member or carer of someone living with disability.
Get ready for emergencies on your own
Get Ready for Emergencies – Start with this guide for individuals and households to prepare for emergencies. This replaces the SES Home emergency plan.
The Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) workbook can guide you through extra things you might need to think about. If you would like us to send you a copy of the workbook, please email pcep@ses.tas.gov.au.

Your support provider can also help you to get ready for emergencies as part of your everyday support. Ask your support provider to visit this page for more information.
Information for disability support providers
If you are a support provider for people living with disability, we can work with you to:
- Learn about the P-CEP approach and how to support your participants get ready for emergencies
- Help you include getting ready for emergencies in your everyday supports
- Help you test and refine your emergency plans so you can continue to support people during and after emergencies.
Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness for your participants supports your organisation to show compliance with NDIS quality standards on ensuring people have adequate safety plans in place for emergencies. P-CEP complements your organisation’s emergency plans, and the national Disability Inclusive Emergency Management Framework.
A first step for disability service providers to partner with the project is for someone in your organisation to do the P-CEP Facilitator course – fill in an expression of interest form
Please email pcep@ses.tas.gov.au if you have any questions.
